Travel Goods Specialist Certificate Training Program
WELCOME!
You may be a sales associate or a buyer for a travel goods store or department or be affiliated with our industry in another capacity. You may be new to the industry or in a new position. Whatever your role is, a thorough understanding of travel goods, how they are used, and how people travel will be an indispensable aid in meeting the needs of your customers and in being a successful Travel Goods Specialist.
TGA has developed this training program to help you get the basic information you need easily, efficiently, and at your own pace and schedule. The program begins with a brief pre-test to help you understand your current knowledge level. From there, you will begin the first of three modules. Each module takes approximately one hour to complete and is followed by a brief, ten-question test that is intended to reinforce the information that was presented and help prepare you for the post-test. You will have the opportunity stop and resume your training according to your own schedule, and to go back and review material as you desire.
Module I: Identifying the Travel Customer's Needs and Desires
This module focuses on how and why people travel, the types of products available to them, and how to assist in selecting the right product(s) for the appropriate use. This critical level of service will create customer satisfaction and a better travel experience.
Module II: Product Design, Features, Materials, and Construction
The second module will focus on the design, features, materials, and construction of luggage, business cases, and other types of bags. Literature from different manufacturers will use its own terminology and marketing descriptions for the listed products. Here we will attempt to level the playing field and simplify the selection process by using industry accepted terms and standards to describe elements that may define quality and value for the traveling consumer.
You will get inside and up close to all kinds of bags and learn what makes them unique. What are their features and related benefits? You will learn about hardside, softside, and leather bags, discover how they are made, and examine the relative advantages of different materials. You will see different types of frames, zippers, seams, wheels, and handles. When you are done, you will be able to look at any travel bag and understand its features and benefits.
Module III: How to Prepare, How to Travel, and What to do When Things Go Wrong
Here is where we address the broader travel industry and, in particular, airline and security information and regulations. As a Travel Goods Specialist, your customers will expect you to know about the issues they will face while traveling around the country or around the world. This module will focus on airline, security, and baggage regulations and requirements. You will learn about passport and visas and how to deal with lost or damaged luggage. As you help your customers with these important questions, you can recommend appropriate products for their needs, and they will regard you as their expert.
FINAL TEST
When you complete module three, you will be ready for the final test and receipt of the Certified Travel Goods Specialist designation. Should you receive a passing score on the final test (60% or greater), you will be mailed a certificate to illustrate your achievement. Good luck!
Do not be discouraged if you are performing poorly on the pre-test, within session exercises or session tests. Remember that this is a training course and the purpose of these assessments is to reinforce the content that was presented. Try to retain as much as possible and revisit areas where you feel unsure of content. Note that the only measure that contributes to your overall performance on the course is the post-test so try to prepare as best you can.
Are you ready? Let's start with your pre-test.
